DIDs (Decentralized IDentifiers) are somewhat like IP addresses — not particularly memorable, but can serve as cryptographic trust anchor.

The @BlockstackOrg anchor in BTC is essentially a DID. The spec is for common approaches across different chains.
DIDs thus serve as a “personal root”. In other systems this could be just a time-stamped public key, but DIDs allow for rotation of keys.
DIDs resolve to DDOs (DID Descriptor Objects)—signed JSON containing all the metadata needed to prove ownership and control of a DID.
There are multiple DID methods. Each define how it is registered, resolved to a DDO, updated, rotated and revoked on specific blockchains.
