Agile isn’t it, (but let’s not go back to wayerfall). Closest example I’ve seen to date is in Bitcoin Core community. https://twitter.com/www_ora_tion_ca/status/1027776256719429632

We give a very large discount for those who submit topic papers in advance, which is part of our collaborative process. Reading these before the event helps people understand current ideas & common interests. If people choose not to do they support us by help covering expenses.

An independent with a topic paper (which can be just a few pages or some smart questions) signing up before Early Bird Deadline, is a discount of $700. The balance just barely covers our costs for a 3 day event.

Most people submit topic papers. We’ve never made a profit. If there is an excess we hold some as a reserve for next event, some is used for academic & diversity scholarships. We’d like to be able to sometimes offer some expense reimbursements for leadership team but not to date.
