Today, June 1, Blockchain Commons @BlockchainComns held our first Silicon Salon, to discuss the future of semiconductor design for cryptography [1/8] https://www.siliconsalon.info/

Thu Jun 02 05:51:13 +0000 2022

We began with presentations from semiconductor manufacturers and wallet manufacturers to help to lay the foundation for our discussion. [4/8] https://www.siliconsalon.info/presentations/

Thu Jun 02 05:51:14 +0000 2022

The goal of the salon was to bring together people from the crypto community with semiconductor manufacturers who are interested in better supporting modern cryptography. We wanted to facilitate the sharing of use cases, requirements and other needs. [3/8]

Thu Jun 02 05:51:14 +0000 2022

As an attendee said: “Crypto wallets [are] using semiconductors that are largely designed … for other purposes. Look at a typical MCU in a wallet, you probably have a hundred such MCUs in your house. They were designed for those purposes, not for cryptocurrency.” [2/8]

Thu Jun 02 05:51:14 +0000 2022

Many thanks to our sustaining sponsors who made our hosting of this event possible. If you’d like to support more of this type of work, you can do so on our GitHub Sponsorship page. [8/8] https://github.com/sponsors/BlockchainCommons

Thu Jun 02 05:51:15 +0000 2022

Thanks to everyone who presented and everyone who attended! Since the goal was to join everyone’s voices together and kick off a conversation, you’re the ones who made the Silicon Salon work! [7/8]

Thu Jun 02 05:51:15 +0000 2022

We’re continuing those discussion online at GitHub discussions. Please join us to have your say! [6/8] https://github.com/BlockchainCommons/Airgapped-Wallet-Community/discussions/categories/silicon-salon

Thu Jun 02 05:51:15 +0000 2022

We then held discussions on a variety of topics, including pain points, architectures, bootloaders, firmware, supply-chain issues, cryptographic primitives, protocols, acceleration, threats, countermeasures, and the ecosystem. [5/8] https://www.siliconsalon.info/#discussions

Sat Jun 04 19:05:58 +0000 2022

I am not sure I agree with the language, but I do agree about the sentiment. The term “security” is too often focused on financial harm, threats to property, and thus lends itself to business. I often hear “CEOs & billionaires have privacy rights too”. True, but they also have responsibilities. If they want to be passive (say Jackie Onassis) they deserve that privacy. But if they want to be active, they loose some privacy, need to accept some risks, and be responsible.

Sat Jun 04 19:05:59 +0000 2022

For instance, if I choose to accept leadership in a group, I should forego certain kinds of privacy that others in my group need to have. I have to justify my decisions. To be sometime unsafe. A safe world only benefits the status quo, which is not sustainable long-term. …

If this moves forward, WRDAs could offer clarity to creators, consumers, businesses, and investors by codifying protections and expectations of digital assets, under Wyoming digital asset laws leveraging their new Chancery Court. [4/6]

Tue Jun 14 20:18:27 +0000 2022

WRDA is a proposed framework to clarify bailment & demonstrate perfection under the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) for digital assets, but it could also offer useful certifications for other assets like NFTs, IP, trademarks, real property, etc. [3/6]

Tue Jun 14 20:18:27 +0000 2022

My testimony before them today includes some thoughts on a new idea —  a new concept I call a “Wyoming Registered Digital Asset”, or WRDA. [2/6]

Tue Jun 14 20:18:27 +0000 2022

I am speaking later this afternoon before the Wyoming Select Committee on Blockchain, Financial Technology and Digital Innovation Tech about digital assets. Today’s livestream livestream has begun. [1/6] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnvoPd08wVs

Tue Jun 14 20:18:27 +0000 2022

Since many states (and some nations) are looking to the Wyoming legislation for models to use with digital assets, I’m hopeful that @BlockchainComns work before the Select Committee will ultimately affect laws worldwide. [6/6] /cc @rothfuss @JaredSOlsen @CaitlinLong_ @SenLummis

Tue Jun 14 20:18:28 +0000 2022

This may be too inside-baseball for some, but the ultimate goal is to ensure that digital assets can have all the advantages and all the security of physical assets This is a crucial step forward. Thanks to Wyoming for letting me testify on this topic! [5/6]

The problem is that currently private key disclosure can be forced in the early stages of a legal process, resulting in threats of false witness or irrevocable asset transfers, for which the private key holder has no legal recourse.[2/9]

Wed Jun 15 15:20:19 +0000 2022

On today’s livestream at the #Wyoming Legislative Select Committee on Blockchain, Financial Technology and Digital Innovation Tech, I’m also testifying about private key disclosure. [1/9] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TjD7PbeSP0

Wed Jun 15 15:20:19 +0000 2022

A private key can be someone’s digital signature or their verification of identity. Having that key compromised by a malicious actor can cause egregious harm. As a technologist, I know of no safe ways to transfer private keys. So we need better protection for private keys! [5/9]

Wed Jun 15 15:20:20 +0000 2022

Testimony from former Mary Beth Buchannan, former U.S. Attorney for W. Dist. PA is in agreement “Honestly, I would be very concerned about turning over a private key to a court.” [4/9] https://diyhpl.us/wiki/transcripts/wyoming-select-committee/private-key-disclosure-buchanan/

Wed Jun 15 15:20:20 +0000 2022

This is made worse by the fact that courts do not currently have the technical and security infrastructure to reasonably protect a keyholder’s rights and ensure that the private key remains private! [3/9]

Wed Jun 15 15:20:20 +0000 2022

My written testimony covers not just this Private Key Disclosure law, but also about of data privacy and e-residency, the other topics I will discuss in today’s session. [7/9] https://wyoleg.gov/InterimCommittee/2022/S19-2022061413-02DigitalIdentityPrivacyeResidencyandPrivateKeyDisclosure.pdf

Wed Jun 15 15:20:21 +0000 2022

Thus I have been trying to get special protection for private keys since I first proposed the concept in 2019 #KeysAreNotAssets. Wyoming is currently considering this legislation to do exactly that, and so I strongly support it! [6/9]

Advance readings also share your specific knowledge, expertise, and experience. Rebooting the Web of Trust is all about bringing together people to collaborate on the next generation of decentralized systems, for our mutual benefit. Advance readings get the ball rolling. [4/9]

This looks interesting. Effectively this means there is a FROST-like quorum mechanism not only for Schnorr, but also Bitcoin legacy’s (and Ethereum’s) Elgamal ECDSA. This might allow for offline multisig wallets even for the Ethereum which does not have multisig crypto on chain. https://twitter.com/cronokirby/status/1539824752768024577
