L:Portland, OR. Had a great dinner and conversation with Raven Zachary and Mara Collins last night.
Was also fun to sit and watch Raven Zachary and Mara Collins kids playing in the warm summer night. We don’t get that often in Berkeley.
L:Rest stop 21 miles south of Olympia, WA. Day started cool and cloudy, but it is beginning to brighten up. On way to south Peugeot Sound.
It has been as cold and foggy as Berkeley today on the Pugent Sound.
Just looked into the prices for AT&T roaming in Canada. Atrocious! And there is no way to turn off EDGE on iPhone w/o also turning off WiFi!
Catching up on my email before I head up Vancouver Island from Victoria. Cell access too expensive up here, so soon will be offline.

Five of us during break at retreat are down in “the shop” where the wifi works to do email and work stuff. No wifi where the sessions are.
Raining today, first chance I’ve had to play on my laptop for several days as connectivity is limited on this island.

L:East side of Cascade Range, just went through Snoqalmie Pass (I love saying that name). On I-90 following the Yakima river to Ellensburg.
Very nice lunch at Starlight Cafe, 402 N Pearl, Ellensburg, WA. Don’t know if I will be out here again, but nice to note in case I do.
L:Yakima, WA. I’m quite impressed with the Yakima Valley Museum. A huge collection of Americana, and a shrine to SuprCourt Justice Douglas.
Left museum to orchard the tourist bureau recommended for peach sundae. The peaches were warm and sweet, the ice cream cold, and the air 99°
There was swimming pool outside of museum with noisy happy kids. Couldn’t resist returning for a swim. Haven’t done a water slide for ~20yr!
I didn’t intend to stop in Yakima, WA, but glad I did. Think I may stay the night and visit indian reservation tomorrow.
L:Toppenish, WA, in the Yakima Indian Nation. Arrived last night and got a free buffet from casino - a bargain if you don’t gamble.
Heading today off to Columbia Gorge, plan to visit Yakima Nation Heritage Museum, Maryhill Museum, Stonehenge Monument, ending Hood River.

L:Hood River, OR. Most of the towns to the east seem Republican. Not Hood River–lots of organic cafes, slow/local food, etc. Nice.
L:The Dalles, WA. Couldn’t find a room in Hood River, WA, so went back upstream to this trucker town for a room.
A big contrast a few miles makes. I think The Dalles must be ~5-10° warmer, and much more blue collar and republican then liberal Hood River
Choices: Downstream to Portland and then I-5 home, downstream to Pacific and 101 home, or take roads from here south to Bend, OR/Crater Lake
Decided I’ve gotten enough urbananity and fog, so I’m going to go for rural, hot and dry. Off to Bend, OR with side trip to Timberline Lodge
L:Bend, Oregon, after a side trip to Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood, and Kah-nee-ta resort casino on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation.
Didn’t expect Hood, Oregon to be a relatively liberal town. No big college. But it appears to be. Beautiful and vibrant downtown area.
Skipping BarCamp, was thinking about coming back for it, but seems way too crowded (way beyond the dunbar number).
If you are staying in Bend, OR, I highly recommend the Phoenix Inn – right next to downtown, classy rooms, not too expensive.
Enjoying Bend, OR, but some rain coming in this evening, so heading out before I had originally planned to so that I can see Crater Lake.
I’m glad I left early – Crater Lake was sunny when I got to the north side, and cloudy by the time I got to the south side.
Klamath Falls, OR was a waste of time, went ahead on down to L:Dunsmuir, CA, near Mt. Shasta.

Back to work – going through priorities from two weeks of being mostly offline.

Taking a “snow day” – reading a lot, resting, and otherwise not doing chores or errands.
The weather has been so cold in Berkeley this week that a couple of our Maple trees are turning red.

Took a chance since so many SF Bay twitterers were twittering about the eclipse that she would be watching it too. My sweetie was watching.
Right before totality ended, the moon was black, red, and a faint blue, probably from the reflected earthlight.

L:Finished another day at Areae. Raph Koster has attracted a very talented group of people.
Last day at Areae in San Diego. It is fun to be their first alpha tester. Debrief with Raph Koster and John Donham today, then fly home.
