Getting my act together before heading over to iPhoneDevCamp. Will be there for setup at 2pm.

x-icon Fri Aug 01 18:40:49 +0000 2008

At iPhoneDevCamp, running around setting up stuff. Volunteers still needed – anyone got an SUV ;-)

x-icon Fri Aug 01 22:21:30 +0000 2008

Spent most of the evening at iPhoneDevCamp matchmaking different people with teams with similar interests. Some cool iPhone apps are coming!

Back at iPhoneDevCamp – keynote starts roughly 9:45

x-icon Sat Aug 02 15:45:06 +0000 2008

We have pizzas coming for 400 but only 225 people at iPhoneDevCamp SF, so come join us at 5:30 at Adobe.

Back home after a very successful day bringing people and solutions together at iPhoneDevCamp. We will have a lot of cool stuff tomorrow!

x-icon Sun Aug 03 06:24:51 +0000 2008

Getting ready for iPhoneDevCamp Hackathon at 2pm. There will lots of cool apps shown, with some nice prizes. Come on by for the show!

x-icon Sun Aug 03 16:21:31 +0000 2008

Whew, what a weekend. 44 new iPhone apps presented at iPhoneWebDev Hackathon. Many were written over weekend by people who never met before.

x-icon Mon Aug 04 06:01:52 +0000 2008

Spent morning sleeping late after iPhoneDevCamp – had lunch with my cousin Brahm, who was in transit briefly at SFO after flying from Korea

x-icon Tue Aug 05 05:14:41 +0000 2008

Urgh. Not a single downloaded app will run on my iPhone other then apple’s built in. Upgraded to 2.0.1, no change. Factory reset time again.

x-icon Tue Aug 05 16:40:11 +0000 2008

Heading to Cortes Island, BC, Canada. Synced my music and apps to iPhone before leaving but now iPhone crapper out.

x-icon Thu Aug 07 21:19:40 +0000 2008

iPhone’s Safari still working but all 3rd party apps failing. Tried reboot, no. Tried reset but lost all music - drats!

x-icon Thu Aug 07 21:23:19 +0000 2008

Warning to all, if you use the iPhone’s Setting’s Reset it says it will not erase your data. My contacts are still there but all music gone.

Boarding OAK to SEA, meeting Gifford at Ferry terminal, then off to Cortes Island, Canada. First time bringing my hang drum.

x-icon Thu Aug 07 23:00:26 +0000 2008

I have an iPod Touch, which I largely use for testing. It too can’t run any third party apps, and TV shows on it fails. I suspect FairPlay.

x-icon Fri Aug 08 00:49:45 +0000 2008

Arrived SEA Seatac Airport.

x-icon Fri Aug 08 00:50:44 +0000 2008

Waiting at Java Shack (free wifi) for penultimate ferry to Quadra Island. Last ferry will be to Cortes Island. Location: http://gpstwit.

x-icon Fri Aug 08 21:13:52 +0000 2008

Only using wifi in Canada. $0.79 per minute for calls, $1.50ish per megabyte, $0.20 per SMS. AT&T choices for international plans suck.

No road to Channel Rock on Cortes Island, BC, so I’m hauling luggage on dingy. Piloted it solo this time. http://flickr.com/photos/chris

x-icon Sat Aug 09 08:08:17 +0000 2008

Gyazickr on iPhone doesn’t deal with twitter post length very well either. It posts to twitter via safari, Flickup uses Twitteriffic.

Gyazickr iPhone App only posts 320 x 240 pictures, lost geolocation info (see http://tinyurl.com/5nhb68 ). Sorry, removing from phone.

x-icon Sat Aug 09 08:20:42 +0000 2008

Flickup uploads 1024 x 768, much better then then Gyazickr. But like Gyazickr, appears to loose geolocation info on upload.

x-icon Sat Aug 09 08:23:44 +0000 2008

Only thing Gyazickr did right was caption. Flickup did a better caption. Both failed to deal with limited length of twitter posts.

x-icon Sat Aug 09 08:23:57 +0000 2008

Arrived Channel Rock on Cortes Island, BC, after boating in my luggage. Took a while to get wifi up - very remote here.

x-icon Sat Aug 09 08:25:16 +0000 2008

No power lines to Channel Rock, all electricity is generated using solar. Here is the solar panel controller: http://tinyurl.com/5c6vb5

x-icon Sat Aug 09 08:33:31 +0000 2008

AirMe iPhone App posts only new photos to Flickr (i.e not from photo roll), only supports is 640 x 480: http://tinyurl.com/5c6vb5

x-icon Sat Aug 09 08:36:24 +0000 2008

AirMe also appears to lose the geoloc info in the photo, but does put a loc name in caption – in this case, the closest is Campbell River.

x-icon Sat Aug 09 08:38:02 +0000 2008

So far disappointed with the iPhone Flickr upload apps. All loose geodata in the photo itself, and none upload the full sized photo.

x-icon Sat Aug 09 08:48:52 +0000 2008

For comparison, see a photo from iPhone w/geoloc transfered to iPhoto, then uploaded to Flickr. Great metadata: http://tinyurl.com/67vxdd

Sunny morning–woke up late, ate food grown from the garden, played my hang drum, taught some djembe, and took a solar shower. I am content.

x-icon Sat Aug 09 20:44:10 +0000 2008

Just woke to the threnody of wolves in the hills above Channel Rock on Cortes island, BC.

x-icon Sun Aug 10 13:41:34 +0000 2008

First time I’ve heard the mournful song of wolves. It was more like a singing chorus then the more random howling that i had imagined.

x-icon Sun Aug 10 13:43:48 +0000 2008

More wolf song last night, and several of the residents of some of the outbuildings last night heard the pitter-patter of padded feet.

x-icon Mon Aug 11 17:25:04 +0000 2008

Wonderful day of conversation, walking the rocks at low tide, drumming, and great food at Channel Rock, Cortes Island.

x-icon Thu Aug 14 06:57:53 +0000 2008

Slow, pleasant, warm day on Channel Rock. The honey bees are diligently working and I am not.

x-icon Thu Aug 14 18:25:39 +0000 2008

Beautiful seaplane trip from Cortes Island to Renton (near Seattle). 1300 ft up down the Puget Sound with great visibility. Lots of photos.

x-icon Sat Aug 16 01:45:51 +0000 2008

A little too tight a connection from the Boeing Airport where the seaplanes land to SEA Seatac Airport, but made it. On way back to OAK.

x-icon Sat Aug 16 01:48:07 +0000 2008

Arrived OAK airport, heading home. Gotta clean up before M gets back from her vacation Tuesday.

x-icon Sat Aug 16 03:41:43 +0000 2008

First time I’ve traveled with my hang drum. No trouble with travelling with it as a carry on - the checkers are curious but not suspiscious

x-icon Sat Aug 16 03:53:24 +0000 2008

Have Hang, Will Travel ;-)

x-icon Sat Aug 16 03:54:08 +0000 2008

Been doing a massive consolidation and backup of all my hard drives onto a single system, the making an office copy. Took almost two days.

x-icon Sat Aug 23 06:13:20 +0000 2008

While my drives were being backed up, I did some spring cleaning on my home office (a bit late, I know) Still a lot to do but much progress.

x-icon Sat Aug 23 06:14:48 +0000 2008

My desktop Mac is finally back up and running with a fresh install, and all backups complete. Performance is much perkier.

x-icon Sat Aug 23 06:17:05 +0000 2008

Had a nice birthday party last Saturday (early, because the real date is in middle of labor day weekend), played games with friends all day.

x-icon Mon Aug 25 19:16:05 +0000 2008

Sunday took the day off — rested, read some books, ate some leftover birthday cake, watch some TiVo. A good relaxing day.

My rule of thumb on m4v vs mp4 is is it primarily a video with a single audio stream, then mp4, but if it anything else, m4a.

Heading off to the ConQuest game convention in Santa Clara. Hope to LARP and play some good stategic board games.

x-icon Sat Aug 30 17:55:45 +0000 2008

Played in a LARP a gentleman mage from England visiting New Amsterdam still held by the Dutch in the Early 1800s. Good imaginative game.
