Hashed data with suitable nonces, as well as various hash trees should not be considered pseudo-anonymous, as the same values hashed at another time result in different hashes and thus are not correlateable. But I agee bare hashes are often a bad idea — a lesson from FOAF.

DIDs are closer to your personal SSH & PGP keys. All 3 allow you to do TOFU, web-of-trust & self-sovereign keys, but DIDs add functionality over SSH/PGP that offers rotation, revocation, time sig, issue structured claims about other keys and keyholders, and more advanced crypto.

There are a number of scenarios being investigated. One includes something called “social key recovery”. This is not secret sharing, instead is a list of other DIDs, a timelock, and smart signature that you select in advance, which they can revoke & create a new key for you.

When your identity is decentralized it is a lot safer to have your data be merely distributed. There are emerging protocols for enabling decentralized data (IPFS etc) & decentralized transit (Tor etc) In the meantime there is a place for portable data from traditional vendors.

My main point was that this requirement from Project Xanadu was written in 80s, but was never feasible except in a very centralized way. In particular transclusion. Now it may be feasible in a decentralized way with low transaction fees.

The are implementing DIDs (which was incubated at #RebootingWebOfTrust which I host, the spec of which now moving to W3C Credentials CG which I co-chair), so yes am familiar. Be careful — not everyone claiming be doing DIDs or Verifiable Credentials actually is. Many free riders!

For instance, no one at Accenture has been at any of the decentralized identity events we host, nor are actively contributing to the standard. We would welcome them, but get frustrated when PR is positive for them when there is a lack of support for us who are implementing.
