Coming into this project I knew that rotating a PGP key would be a PIA. Our goal with #RebootingWebOfTrust is to replace this 25+ year old tech with DIDs which are explicitly rotatable. But in the meantime I want to bridge the PGP web-of-trust world as I have 20 year history.

If they follow a self-sovereign architecture, which I believe is the plan, many of these issues are addressed. It still requires a lot of effort to do responsibly but it is at least possible, whereas in India’s Aadhaar & Chinese social credit architectures are not safe at all.

I believe Civic currently has a relatively centralized system, but they attended the last #RebootingWebOfTrust and said they planned to work toward a more self-sovereign identity architecture and support multiple DIDs & blockchains. I hope they show up again.

Service endpoints in DIDs are not critical path so have not been at the forefront of our discussions, but I believe ultimately will become quite powerful. A challenge is avoiding correlation, but addressable if you are careful, and isn’t required in all scenarios.

As someone who had to use ASN.1 & X.509 in the next generation of standards (I was co-editor in IETF of the TLS spec) it was clear to me that these older specs were largely not designed by implementors, unlike the rest of TLS. In addition, the specs were $5K each!

Very frustrated today finding & using @CreativeCommons images for some hobby game designs. Image search (Google, etc) that supposedly support search for CC are doing an increasingly poor job of dealing with ripoff sites, such as Pixabay lists lots of stuff as CC that are not. /1

I’ve had to go back to a number of images I’d planned to use and do due diligence on them. Best tool for that so far has been @tineye which does reverse image search. It can list oldest found similar images, and that is where I often find the real creators & typically non-CC /2

Flickr used to be a good source of CC images, but in recent years it seems fewer images are offered under a CC-BY license. Likely because of so many ripoff websites. As a long time supporter of open source licenses & CC in my own works, it is sad to see this decline. /fin
