I agree with you @TheBlueMatt—the word ‘trustless’ should be reserved to a higher standard. There is value in public federated systems, and there is utility in hosting a node to audit that federation, but that node is not contributing to a trustless system, only an auditable one.

I also believe that there is a fundamental difference between voting as part of larger deliberation systems for the creation of laws, vs ways of determining collective wisdom of a small community. Like a number of other areas some systems don’t scale (see my Dunbar articles).

Working on making it easier again with the BTCR method of Decentralized Identifier (DID) as an eventual replacement for PGP. Current alpha version doesn’t use LN but I hope future versions will.
I had a similar experience with this around 2005, except that the practice then was for late stage VCs to cut out seed investors during a bear market by removing preferences unless you co-invested at subsequent rounds. I use bitcoin not because not because of its potential value as speculative asset, but for its real value as it is censorship-resistant (aka coercion-resistant) & has true cryptographic-based smart contracts (as opposed to ETH code) which allow payment channels like Lightning.
I’ve long been uncomfortable with JavaScript & Node solutions & applications for Bitcoin due to problems like these. The tool chain is insecure, and the language is as well.
