I’m not convinced that the solution requires a non-profit, but at least “not-for-profit” & designed to make corporate exit strategies not possible except to avoid bankruptcy. Design solution space includes benefit corp, revenue-backed financing, participative equity & governance.

Presumably if you control the dedicated hardware (your own or in the cloud) you are less vulnerable until compromised some other way. However, unless you have a hypervisor that isolates threads, which is not common in cloud, you are vulnerable to other VMs not under your control.

I’m not very enthusiastic about Gaia. It seems to be a very Blockstack specific architecture, whereas Lightning has multiple competing companies offering heterogeneous implementations. IPFS also suffers from being a one-company protocol, but feels more broadly adopted by others.

With BTCR DIDs (bitcoin-based decentralized identifiers) there is no personal data that is on an immutable blockchain. Only proofs using hashes & cryptographic signatures. Most DID proposals have personal data on mutable layer 2, not immutable layer 1.

Certainly what the @zcashfoundation is doing is an example of “off-chain” governance. They have selected an somewhat independent group of members (separate from @zcash) to make decisions on what to fund. I suspect it is less susceptible to abuse than chains having coin votes.
